Porirua’s New Zealand Police Museum made a splash these school holidays with a special visit from the National Dive Squad, giving tamariki and their whānau a hands-on glimpse into the world of underwater policing.
Held during the museum’s popular school holiday programme, the visit featured an interactive display of dive gear, safety equipment, and underwater rescue tools. Children had the chance to explore the high-tech gear and learn directly from squad members about their unique and challenging role.

“It’s not every day you get to meet a real police diver,” said one excited parent. “The kids loved trying on the equipment and asking all their curious questions.”
The Dive Squad, part of the New Zealand Police’s national specialist groups, is responsible for recovering evidence, vehicles, and even missing persons from lakes, rivers, and oceans across the country. Their visit added a real-world learning element that helped bring policing careers to life.
The Police Museum, located in Porirua, is open daily from 10am to 5pm, excluding Christmas Day and Good Friday. Its holiday programmes are a longstanding hit with families, offering fun, educational activities focused on crime-solving, law enforcement, and community safety.
