Labour MP Barbara Edmonds has confirmed she will stand in the new Kenepuru electorate at the 2026 general election, as boundary changes reshape the political landscape north of Wellington.
Edmonds, who currently represents Mana, said she looks forward to campaigning in the new seat, which includes large parts of her existing electorate.
“I want to acknowledge the people of Mana who first elected me to Parliament in 2020,” Edmonds said. “While I won’t be going far… the boundary changes mean some now fall into the capable and fresh hands of Sophie Handford, our candidate for Kāpiti.”
She said she is energised by the opportunity to continue serving the community under the revised boundaries and committed to leading Labour back into government.
“There is a lot to be excited about, a Labour Government that will create a better future for you and your family here in New Zealand,” she said.
Edmonds reaffirmed her support for Labour’s core platform, including free annual GP visits for every New Zealander, a targeted capital gains tax excluding family homes, and a Future Fund to support local innovation.
“I can’t wait to hit the streets, doors and markets to not only share our plan but also to meet more of you and to listen to what matters most,” she said.
The Kenepuru electorate will be contested for the first time in 2026, following a boundary review by the Electoral Commission to reflect population growth in the region.
“We won’t just be a Labour Government, we’ll be your Government,” Edmonds said. “Bring on 2026!”
