The Solomon Islands flag is raised in Porirua to launch Solomon Aelan Pijin Langguis Wik, marking the start of a week dedicated to celebrating language and culture under the 2025 theme, Protektim langguis an kalsa blong yumi.

Porirua celebrated the beginning of Solomon Aelan Pijin Langguis Wik this morning with a vibrant flag-raising ceremony, signalling the start of a week dedicated to honouring Solomon Islands culture and language.

The 2025 theme, Protektim langguis an kalsa blong yumi – Protect our language and culture, reflects a commitment to preserving linguistic heritage and cultural identity. The event brought together community leaders, residents, and supporters of Pacific languages, reinforcing Porirua’s pride in its cultural diversity.

“Our language weeks are a time to reflect, observe, and honour the richness our communities bring to this city,” a Porirua City Council spokesperson said. “Celebrating Pacific cultures like those of the Solomon Islands is part of what makes Porirua so special.”

Solomon Islands Pidgin is one of many languages celebrated across New Zealand as part of the Ministry for Pacific Peoples’ Pacific Language Weeks. These initiatives support the revitalisation of Pacific languages and offer opportunities for both learning and cultural exchange.
