Porirua’s billiards and snooker community is remembering former New Zealand representative Russell “Russ” Robinson, who died peacefully on June 18, aged 80.
Russ was a six-time New Zealand billiards runner-up and competed in one national final against his father, national champion Herb Robinson.
He was also known for sharing his experience with younger players at the Porirua Club.
New Zealand Snooker Champion Cody Turner said he learned a great deal from Russ as a child in the club’s snooker room.
He remembered Russ as a man with “great knowledge and wisdom”.
Russ also contributed to the administration of billiards and snooker and was respected throughout the wider Wellington cue sports community.
Former New Zealand Billiards and Snooker administrator Nigel Wilson described him as a great man, a fantastic billiards player and an all-round gentleman.
“He will be missed and remembered fondly,” Wilson said.
Russ was farewelled by friends and fellow players at the Johnsonville Club, where Kevin Bracken and other long-time billiards supporters shared memories and stories.
His sporting involvement also included cricket for Naenae and Hutt Districts and a long association with Poneke Rugby.
The Harcourt-Robinson tournament is due to be played at the Porirua Club, giving local players and supporters another opportunity to recognise his contribution to the sport.
A private cremation has taken place. A celebration of Russ’s life for family and friends will be held at a date to be advised.
