The direct highway route between Porirua and the Hutt Valley will close for five nights from Sunday 1 November, sending through traffic via State Highways 1 and 2 while crews repair the road, barriers and drainage on Haywards Hill.
State Highway 58 will close in both directions between the Transmission Gully interchange at Pāuatahanui and the SH2 Haywards Interchange from 9pm to 4am, Sunday 1 to Thursday 5 November nights. The last closure is scheduled to end at 4am on Friday 6 November.
The detour runs via Transmission Gully, SH1 through Ngauranga Gorge and SH2. Drivers travelling between Porirua or Whitby and the Hutt Valley will need to allow extra time for the longer journey.
Traffic-management crews will begin setting up from 7pm, when some delays are possible, but the road closure itself starts at 9pm.
Residents, businesses, their customers and emergency services will retain access within the closed section, with escorts where needed. Properties between the Transmission Gully interchange and Moonshine Road must be accessed from the Transmission Gully end. Properties between Moonshine Road and Haywards Interchange must be accessed from the Haywards end.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says the closures allow crews to complete maintenance safely without passing traffic. The programme includes barrier repairs, paving and drainage work, alongside work for the SH58 Safety Improvements project.
That project also has an altered lane layout between Moonshine Road and Flightys Road at Judgeford, operating day and night throughout the 31 October to 6 November reporting period.
On SH59, the Titahi Bay northbound on-ramp is scheduled to close for resurfacing from 10pm on Thursday 5 November until 4.30am on Friday 6 November. The closure applies to the on-ramp, not the whole highway.
Transmission Gully drivers face separate daytime restrictions during the week. Bridge maintenance between Waitangirua and Takapu Substation will require a southbound lane closure from 9am to 5pm, Monday 2 to Friday 6 November.
All planned roadworks are weather-dependent and may be postponed at short notice. Drivers should check NZTA’s Journey Planner before travelling, particularly when planning an overnight trip between Porirua and the Hutt Valley.
