ASB Polyfest Celebrates 50 Years of Cultural Pride

The ASB Polyfest returns in full force this week, celebrating its 50th anniversary with record-breaking participation and deep cultural pride at the Manukau Sports Bowl in Auckland.

From Wednesday, 2 April to Saturday, 5 April, the venue will host over 11,000 students from 77 schools, performing across six cultural stages representing Māori, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, and a Diversity stage with acts from communities such as Chinese, Fijian, Tokelau, Indian, Korean and Sri Lankan.

Festival Director Seiuli Terri Leo-Mauu said the milestone anniversary has brought renewed energy and participation, with 291 student groups registered — a number not seen since before the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are so excited to welcome our youth back. We can’t wait to see the pride they have in representing themselves, their families, their culture, and their school,” she said.

The festival began with an early morning flag-raising ceremony and powhiri featuring a mass haka performed by Kura Matua schools Western Springs College – Nga Puna o Waiorea and Kia Aroha Campus.

This year’s theme, “He oha nō tua, he taonga tuku iho!” or “LEGACY – a treasure handed down,” encourages youth to honour the journey of those who built the festival over five decades. “Many generations of families have come through this festival,” Leo-Mauu reflected. “It’s massive… The festival has been very special to lots of people.”

Mark Graham, Executive Manager of Commercial Partnerships at ASB, acknowledged the bank’s 40-year partnership with the event. “ASB Polyfest brings many cultures together, creating one community,” he said. “We look forward to supporting the students as they proudly perform for their families and schools.”
