A community tree planting event at Bothamley Park on Friday 20 June is set to bring people together to celebrate Matariki and promote environmental stewardship in Porirua.
The event, titled Whakatō i te wairua o Matariki, will run from 10.30am to 1pm and invites locals to become active kaitiaki of the park, which has recently fully reopened. Organised by Porirua City Council, it offers opportunities to plant native trees, clear litter, and remove pest plants, with fun activities for tamariki and free kai for participants.
Parks Manager Julian Emeny said the initiative is not only about greening the space but building community spirit.
“It’s a chance for volunteers to meet other like-minded locals and learn about opportunities to populate the park with more native trees and keep it a popular destination for so many visitors,” Emeny said.
He noted the planting aligns with the kaupapa of Matariki, symbolising renewal and future growth. Planting will take place at two sites – near the Champion Street and Bellona Place entrances – where Environmental Cadets will also be working.
Community groups including Predator Free Porirua, Mountains to Sea Wellington, and Ngahere Korowai will be present to showcase their conservation work.
Mayor Anita Baker said the event reflects Porirua’s values and commitment to its natural spaces.
“Volunteers are such a valuable part of Porirua. This event will show people where the opportunities are to continue enhancing the city’s natural environment,” she said.
Parking is available along Champion Street and Bellona Place, with the Champion Street entrance within walking distance from Porirua Station.
