Learn to graft fruit trees at Pukerua Bay workshop

A heritage apple ripens on a young grafted tree — locals can learn the art of grafting and grow their own at a hands-on workshop in Pukerua Bay on 20 September.

Locals keen to grow their own fruit trees are invited to a hands-on grafting workshop hosted by the Wellington-Horowhenua branch of the New Zealand Tree Crops Association (NZTCA) on Saturday 20 September in Pukerua Bay.

The event will provide participants with practical skills in fruit tree propagation and the opportunity to take home at least two newly grafted trees. A selection of heritage apple varieties, along with some modern favourites, will be available for grafting.

Warren Kerruish, a seasoned propagation expert and horticultural educator, will lead the workshop. Organisers say the small-group format will allow for personal guidance and a deeper understanding of the grafting process.

“This is the ideal time of year to propagate fruit trees, and we’re fortunate to have Warren share his extensive knowledge,” said a spokesperson for the local NZTCA branch.

The workshop is limited to 25 participants. Registration costs $45 for non-members and includes all materials for grafting two trees.
