Hundreds gathered at North City Shopping Centre last Saturday to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, in a vibrant community event hosted by the Porirua Multicultural Council.

The celebration featured high-energy performances from Paul Story, the Natraj School of Dance, and the Bhatt Group, drawing cheers from an enthusiastic crowd. Mayor Anita Baker attended the event, joined by representatives from the Voice of Aroha and the Upper Hutt Multicultural Council, underscoring the spirit of collaboration and inclusivity.

Alongside the performances, families enjoyed a range of cultural activities, including traditional mehndi (henna) art and colouring for children, creating an atmosphere that was both festive and welcoming.

“It was such a vibrant celebration of culture, community, and light,” organisers said. “We’re incredibly thankful to all who performed and attended. You truly lit up the mall.”

The annual event continues to grow in popularity, reflecting Porirua’s rich cultural diversity and the community’s commitment to honouring traditions from around the world.
