People travelling on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully/Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata are urged to make sure they stay up to date on ongoing roadworks on the motorway.

Contractors are hard at work on drainage works designed to improve the motorway’s resilience and reduce water damage to the road’s surface. There will also be pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing works until February.

This is the reason for the ongoing lane closures at these areas, as well as weekend closures in one direction. Delays are expected during peak times. Drivers are strongly encouraged to consider using State Highway 59 as an alternative route while these lane closures remain in place.

Traffic management will be in place throughout the summer period while we work to complete our summer maintenance programme.

Upcoming closures

There will be weekend closures, as well as 24/7 lane closures during the week. Check the schedule on our website:
https://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/sh-maintenance-programme/wellington-transport-alliance/maintenance-closures/sh1-transmission-gully-summer-maintenance

With maintenance work continuing into February next year, drivers can expect ongoing lane closures on the motorway and further road closures in one direction.

What is happening and why it’s so impactful to traffic

  • To improve the road surface and safety for road users, drainage works are underway to permanently fix water issues on three sections of Transmission Gully where potholes have been prevalent.
  • During the week, contractors are trenching alongside lanes to install underground drainage pipework. The more significant works, which require road closures, are when underground pipework is installed across the width of the road.
  • Contractors cut deep into the road for this work, which is then backfilled with concrete and asphalt. A 24-hour period is required to cure the concrete before asphalt reinstatement. This is why vehicles can’t drive over the road. This is also why road users may notice that contractors are not on site 24/7.
  • In some areas, when the road is closed in one direction, we also need to close a lane in the opposite direction to start on the work affecting the northbound lanes.

Impacts to Porirua/Kāpiti communities and SH59 users

Road users and people in the Porirua and Kāpiti communities can expect to see a lot more traffic on SH59 when SH1 Transmission Gully is closed. This will add to journey times, so please expect delays and more traffic than usual.

While the road closures are in place on Transmission Gully, road users who normally use the Waitangirua Interchange or the SH58 Interchange will at times need to use alternative routes. Please keep an eye on the website for more information.
