The Derek Wootton Memorial Trust has made its final act of generosity by donating its remaining funds to a cause close to its mission.
Established in honour of Porirua police officer Derek Wootton, who was killed in the line of duty on 11 July 2008, the trust was dedicated to supporting young people in achieving their goals. Over its first decade, it raised nearly $120,000 for initiatives such as covering course fees at Whitireia.
One of its key contributions in recent years has been to Te Pahi, Porirua’s community bus service, launched by Porirua City Council in 2016. The service provides transport for tamariki and rangatahi to attend a range of educational and recreational events across the region, including visits to Kaitoke Outdoor Education, Zealandia, Parliament, and local cross-country events.
As the trust winds down its operations, it is donating its final funds, approximately $8,000, to Te Pahi. Porirua City Council has expressed its deep gratitude for the support shown since 2016.
“The trust’s backing has been instrumental in helping our young people access opportunities that enrich their education and personal development,” the council said.
The donation marks the end of an impactful chapter, ensuring that the legacy of Constable Wootton continues through meaningful support for Porirua’s youth.
