An iconic steam train journey is returning to the rails this January, with Porirua residents invited to board a vintage adventure across some of the most breath-taking railway viaducts in Aotearoa.
The “Viaduct Spectacular” excursion, operated by Mainline Steam Heritage Trust, will depart from Plimmerton on Saturday, 24 January 2026, travelling all the way to Taihape and back in a full-day return trip. The route includes the dramatic crossing of the famed South Rangitīkei Viaduct, one of the tallest and most spectacular rail bridges in the North Island.

Making this journey even more memorable, the train will be hauled by DJ 1229, a diesel-electric locomotive making her first mainline appearance in 25 years following a significant rebuild.
“This is one of the most impressive railway outings in the country,” organisers said. “You’ll travel in comfort through stunning central North Island scenery with modern carriages, great views, and even a café carriage.”

Passengers will also be able to enjoy the sights from an open-air viewing platform, offering panoramic views unavailable by road.
The train will stop at Plimmerton, Paraparaumu, Ōtaki, Levin, Palmerston North and Feilding to pick up passengers, making it an accessible and family-friendly outing for residents across the lower North Island.

Mainline Steam described it as “a relaxed, easy summer day out with incredible views you simply can’t get from the road.”
Tickets are on sale now through FareHarbor. The event is expected to attract rail fans, families, and adventure seekers keen for a day out with a difference.
