Porirua United Kirikiti Club will be part of a historic sporting event next Monday when the Hutt Valley hosts its first-ever women’s-only kirikiti tournament.
Porirua United is among the teams competing in the Malaeola Women’s Kirikiti Tournament, being held on Wellington Anniversary Day, Monday January 19, at Fraser Park in Lower Hutt.
The tournament brings together teams from across the region for a full day of competition, culture, and community connection, centred on the Samoan bat-and-ball sport of kirikiti.

Formalities will begin at 8am, followed by the first game kicking off at 9am. Matches will run throughout the day, with the final game scheduled for 4pm. Closing formalities will take place at 5pm, and the tournament is expected to conclude between 6pm and 6.30pm.
Hosted by women’s kirikiti group Matagi mai le Laumua, the event is believed to be the first tournament of its kind in the region and creates a dedicated platform for women to showcase their skill and passion for the sport.

Kirikiti originated in Samoa and is known for its fast pace, rhythmic style, and strong cultural roots. Organisers say the tournament is about more than winning games.
“This is a historic moment for our community,” said Tauvale Whitman, spokesperson for the organising group. “To host the first women’s-only kirikiti tournament in the Hutt Valley is something we’re incredibly proud of. It’s a celebration of our women, our culture, and our Pacific identity.”
Alongside Porirua United, teams competing include Teine 690 Blue, Teine 690 Yellow, Ulalei Lupe, The Katos, Meto Malosi, Teine Toa, and Hutt Girls. Pool matches will be played throughout the day, followed by finals.
The tournament has been designed as a family-friendly event, with music, cultural practices, food stalls, and health services available on site. A smoke-free, vape-free, water-only kaupapa will be in place.
Organisers have acknowledged the support of sponsors and partners including GJ Gardner Hutt Valley, Tū Ora, Vaka Tautua, Hutt City Council, Healthy Families Lower Hutt, Te Whatu Ora, and Ulalei Sport.
Spectators are encouraged to attend, support the teams, and experience kirikiti as the milestone event unfolds.
