One of Porirua’s longest-running sports clubs has marked a significant milestone, with the Titahi Bay Tennis Club celebrating 100 years since it was founded in 1926.
Centenary celebrations were held over the long weekend at the club’s Titahi Bay courts, bringing together current members and former players to reflect on a century of tennis and community life.
The club is widely recognised across the Wellington region for its contribution to the development of tennis and has grown into a family-friendly organisation with more than 120 affiliated members, including a balanced mix of senior and junior players.
For many who attended, the weekend reinforced the club’s long-standing sense of connection. Several members described it as a well organised reunion and said it was special to catch up with old tennis friends, with one calling the club “a home away from home”.
Others said it was reassuring to see the club’s family atmosphere unchanged, with members reconnecting across generations and meeting new faces alongside familiar ones.
The centenary also highlighted how the club has continued to invest in its future. New lights and fencing were installed in 2010, followed by the resurfacing of its three courts with Astroturf in 2011, supported by charity grants. Further upgrades included a new kitchen in 2018 and improved windows and curtains the following year.
Members also praised the organisation behind the celebrations, with social events across the weekend, including a formal dinner and a Sunday barbecue, drawing strong attendance and positive feedback.
As the club enters its second century, the centenary celebrations underscored its enduring role as both a sporting venue and a social hub for Titahi Bay, built on a century of volunteer effort, participation and community support.
