Porirua Police drone catches suspect on church roof

A Police drone hovers in the air during an operation in Porirua.
A Police drone helped officers locate a fleeing suspect hiding on the roof of a church in Plimmerton overnight.

A fleeing motorist who allegedly drove while disqualified across Porirua overnight is facing a string of charges after Police tracked him to the roof of a church in Plimmerton.

Inspector Renée Perkins, Kāpiti Mana Area Commander, said officers identified a vehicle around 12.30am on Wednesday, 14 May, displaying licence plates that did not match the make and model of the car.

Further checks revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen.

Police signalled for the driver to stop using red and blue lights, but the man allegedly continued driving through Porirua before stopping on Grays Road in Plimmerton.

“The driver then fled on foot, jumping a number of fences as Police Dog Units tracked him,” Perkins said.

During the pursuit, the man discarded his hoodie while two police dogs closed in behind him.

A short time later, one of the dogs indicated a person had recently climbed onto the roof of a nearby church.

A Police drone operator then located the man hiding on the roof, where he was taken into custody without incident.

A 33-year-old Kāpiti man is due to appear in the Porirua District Court today facing a number of charges.
