Phoenix, almost rise from the ashes at Porirua Park

Phoenix Striker Mariana Speckmaier winds up a shot on goal.

On a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon in Porirua, amidst a warm and family-friendly atmosphere, the Wellington Phoenix FC Women’s team faced a formidable challenge against the A-League leaders, Sydney FC. Despite a spirited comeback, the home team was unable to overturn a 3-0 deficit, ultimately falling short 4-2 in defeat at Porirua Park.

The game began with Sydney FC asserting their dominance early on, scoring their first goal under the 20 minute mark. Sydney’s lead was then doubled through an own goal by the Phoenix, following a menacing attack that left the Wellington team reeling.

However, the Phoenix showed resilience and fighting spirit. Isabel Cox ignited hopes of a comeback with a header to make it 3-1. Star import, Mariana Speckmaier, then capitalised on Sydney’s defensive lapse, scoring to bring the Phoenix within one.

Sydney FC, feeling the pressure, responded decisively. Jordan Thompson delivered the final blow, securing a 4-2 victory for the visitors with a precise strike into the bottom corner.

Despite the loss, the Wellington Phoenix women demonstrated tremendous heart and determination, leaving fans optimistic about the team’s potential for the rest of the season. The match, played under the bright sun and supported by an enthusiastic crowd, showcased the spirit and competitiveness of women’s football in the A-League.
