More than 2100 students are set to light up Te Rauparaha Arena in early August as the Te Kiwa Nui Festival returns with two days of vibrant cultural performances, school pride, and community spirit.

The festival, formerly known as Polyfest, takes place on 5 and 8 August and brings together school communities from across Porirua and neighbouring suburbs. This year’s host is Bishop Viard College, and the lineup features groups from Newlands, Onslow and Tawa colleges alongside Porirua schools.

Reuben Friend, General Manager Community & Partnerships at Porirua City Council, says the festival has grown tremendously over its 45-year history.

“What started in school halls has become a major event that fills the Arena,” Friend said. “It’s an amazing experience to behold, with vibrant, fun and skilful performances that show off the creativity of our young people and their superb teachers and leaders.”

Friend emphasised the importance of the event not just for youth but for the city’s collective identity.

“There is so much energy and passion, and I can’t wait to see what our schools will come up with this year. It is ingrained in Porirua and is special, not just for young people and their whānau, but our city as a whole.”

In recognition of its cultural and educational impact, Porirua City Council has committed $50,000 annually to Te Kiwa Nui for 2024 through 2026.

In 2022, the Wellington Northern Region Polyfest Trust was established to help the festival adapt to modern needs and ensure its sustainability into the future.

More than 8000 spectators are expected to attend in person, while thousands more will tune into the livestream. Tickets are available from: http://www.tekiwanui.nz/
