Porirua’s Fire Brigade was recognised for 75 years of dedicated service during a weekend of celebrations that honoured long-serving firefighters, their families, and the wider emergency services community.
The anniversary festivities included an expo, barbecue, formal dinner at the Porirua Club, and breakfast event. Among those honoured were SO Tanja Grunwald, SFF Ben Flynn, and SSO Barry Murphy, who each received Gold Star awards for 25 years of service. SFF Kevin Hintz was awarded a rare 50-Year Medal in recognition of his decades of dedication.

“What was also special was the tributes to families who have supported their partners to serve our community,” said Mana MP Barbara Edmonds, who joined the celebrations.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker praised the commitment of brigade members and thanked organisations such as North City Bakery for supplying the anniversary cake, and New World Porirua City for supporting the weekend’s catering.

The event also recognised Officer in Charge Margaret Smith, the first woman to lead the Porirua Volunteer Fire Brigade. Smith and her team were acknowledged for coordinating the weekend’s events, which brought together past and present permanent and volunteer firefighters.

“Congratulations on 75 years to our Porirua Fire Station. A special mention to our volunteers who give their time freely to our city,” said Sandra Meredith, reflecting the community’s appreciation.
The Porirua Fire Brigade continues to play a vital role in keeping the community safe, a commitment recognised and celebrated by hundreds over the milestone weekend.
