Porirua Careers Expo returns, offers prizes and pathways

Three young people stand in front of a bright, multicoloured background. The person in the centre smiles and points directly at the camera, while the two on either side pose confidently, suggesting energy and enthusiasm.
Young people are encouraged to explore future pathways at the upcoming Porirua Careers Expo, returning to Te Rauparaha Arena on 5 May.

The Porirua Careers Expo will return to Te Rauparaha Arena early next month, promising a full day of career inspiration, industry connections and practical support for job seekers and students.

Now in its third year, the free event runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Tuesday, 5 May. It is open to students, school leavers and anyone exploring future education or employment pathways.

More than 80 exhibitors are expected, spanning industries such as technology, construction, trades, health and beauty, and professional services. Attendees will also be able to get help with CVs, speak directly with employers and training providers, and take part in interactive displays.

Organisations signed up include BRANZ, Downer, Porirua New World, Wellington Free Ambulance, Trade Me, PikPok Gaming Studio, banks, Ardmore Flying School, NZ Police and the NZ Defence Force, alongside vocational providers and universities.

The expo is delivered by Porirua City Council in partnership with Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Education, Le Fale Jobs and Skills Hub and Partners Porirua.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said the event continues to grow in popularity and impact.

“The feedback we had from the last two Career Expo events was amazing,” Baker said.

“It has a fun, welcoming atmosphere with plenty of interactive displays and friendly people who will answer all your questions.”

She said it was encouraging to see rangatahi actively exploring their next steps.

“It can be inspiring to see our young people genuinely seeking out those opportunities for the next chapter in their lives, even just making connections and having conversations,” she said.

More than 3300 people attended last year’s expo from across Porirua and the wider Wellington region. Organisers expect even higher turnout this year as the event builds on its growing reputation.

Alongside career advice and networking, attendees will be offered free food, giveaways and the chance to win one of eight $250 Prezzy cards.
