Pacific doctors, medical students and health leaders will gather in Porirua on Saturday for the annual Pacific Health Day hosted by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners Pacific Chapter.

The event at Pātaka Art + Museum marks 10 years since the establishment of the Pacific Chapter and will focus on growing the Pacific general practice and rural hospital medicine workforce while improving health outcomes for Pacific communities across Aotearoa.

The programme includes keynote speakers, workshops and sessions highlighting emerging Pacific voices in healthcare. Organisers say the day is designed to encourage connection, reflection and learning among Pacific GPs, registrars, students, academics and community leaders.

Pacific Chapter chair Dr Alvin Mitikulena is available for interviews about the event, the growth of the Pacific health workforce and the chapter’s achievements over the past decade.

The Pacific Chapter supports College members who identify as Pacific and work in communities with large Pacific populations. The College says increasing the number of Pacific GPs and rural hospital doctors remains a priority as Pacific communities continue to face inequities in healthcare access and health outcomes.

Porirua was chosen as the venue because of its strong Pacific identity and growing healthcare needs.

Saturday’s event is open to members of the Pacific Chapter and Wellington GPs who work for a Pacific provider or have an interest in Pacific health.

People interested in attending can register online through The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.
