Whitby Bowling Club celebrated its 50th Jubilee over the weekend with a series of well-attended events that honoured five decades of sport, community, and camaraderie in Porirua.
The milestone was marked with a jubilant dinner on Saturday evening, followed by a Sunday lunch and an afternoon of bowling. The celebrations brought together current and past members, life members, volunteers, sponsors, local dignitaries, and supporters who have played a role in the club’s rich history.

“It was truly fantastic to welcome so many familiar faces and friends of the club,” said a representative from Whitby Bowling Club. “This Jubilee was about acknowledging not just the sport, but the lifelong friendships and community spirit that have kept us going strong for 50 years.”
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker praised the event and the efforts of the club’s volunteers. “A very enjoyable evening, thanks to all the volunteers for organising such a wonderful event,” she said. “I hope you enjoy your bowls today.”

Mana MP Barbara Edmonds raised the jubilee flag alongside life member Tere French and later joined councillor Sophie Handford for lunch with members. Edmonds called the celebrations “a wonderful achievement worth celebrating,” and commended the Jubilee committee for their hard work.

Handford echoed that sentiment: “Huge mahi put in by the Jubilee committee and well done to the Club that has grown from strength to strength over the last five decades. A real joy to celebrate alongside them!”
Whitby Bowling Club thanked the community for its support and said they look forward to many more celebrations in the years ahead.
