Extensive resurfacing and repair works are underway on SH1 Transmission Gully, prepping the road for winter. Both northbound and southbound lanes are experiencing night-time closures, with traffic detoured via SH59. When the road is open, commuters should expect peak-time delays and are advised to check schedules and consider using SH59 to avoid disruptions.

Chip sealing is underway in both directions throughout January, and it’s important to follow posted speed limits due to the risk of loose chips potentially damaging vehicles. Pavement reconstruction is taking place around Battle Hill, resulting in southbound lane closures and temporary speed restrictions. Northbound, similar pavement projects are ongoing near Waitangirua and north of SH58, with further lane closures and lower speed limits in effect.
The last drainage works northbound near Waitangirua are set to finish by mid-January, weather permitting. Pavement reconstruction northbound (north of SH58) and southbound near Battle Hill will continue until towards the end of January, while further pavement work near Waitangirua begins towards month’s end. Chip seal work in the southbound lanes north of SH58 is complete, with remaining southbound work expected to finish around mid-January, and northbound chip sealing to be completed by early February as weather allows.
Road users are advised to stay updated on the maintenance schedule and allow extra travel time to account for possible delays and changing detours.
